Just amazing ! And it even seems to be streetlegal with a "07"- License. RESPECT for that great piece of engineering. But the Goggomobil was built by the western german company Hans Glas GmbH from Dingolfing and had nothing in common with GDR or communist stuff like the music basically affects.

An I thought putting a Rolls-Royce Merlin in a '55 Chevy was an achievement. While you can't help but laugh at the absurdity of stuffing a radial engine this big into a Goggomobil, you have to give this bloke full marks for engineering. Has he done any quarter mile runs yet?

@thefumanchew Radial engines don't turn high RPM, that is why they work so good for airplanes. Propellers will come apart at much over 3000 RPM. But to think about everything that is going on in a high RPM engine is pretty amazing.

That means one of these engines has almost as much displacement as 32 average Honda's And the B-29 had 4 of these engines. So that's 128 Hondas worth of engine displacement in one plane. Crazy...

Hey, hazmat440. Yes, "reversing" (the pitch) , the props, makes them "push" the air towards the direction of flight (thus, trying to stop the forward progress of the airplane, i.e. slows the plane down). Usually, the props "pull" the air through (and advance the airplane so many inches for each revolution of the prop) depending on the pitch of the prop), and makes the airplane advance in the direction of flight. Ahhhhh Duhhhhhh!

@ZKMX7 I think he meant reverse the prop PITCH, which would have the reverse effect. They are using a fixed pitch prop unfortunately, so they can't do that. The prop that was on this engine when it was on the B-29 had a big silver hub that contained a hyrdraulic piston and a ring gear that interfaced with teeth on each prop blade. This allowed them to control blade pitch but I don't think they could swing them far enough to get much reverse thrust. It was intended for feathering props in flight.

@kidel3 The truck is actually a test rig, with instruments and controls in the cab. (See the guy standing backwards in the truck.) Similar test rigs like these were used in the military as well. In this case, the engine is likely being tested after a rebuild.

@hydrogenix Diseal isnt measured in octane ratings.. Its measured in cetane ratings... the higher the cetane number the easier the fuel ignites when injected into an engine.. Too low the engine wont run too high the engine will make pinging noises..

@hydrogenix And there are some diseals that have spark plugs but the only way to run spark plugs is to run the engine on gasoline till its warm enough.. All you need is heat from the cylinder walls and extreme pressure (which creates extreme heat) and you have combustion but the spark plugs wont work on a diesel there just there to run the engine on gas till it works

You don't see the fire extinguisher next to me, if hadn't shut the mag off immediately, the engine would have died right away because I had tiny amount of gas in the carb. This was just a quick test to see if i'd even run, all other times I ran it outside.

I never did try to start it in the garage after this one attempt, I have other videos where I started it outside. I had all the lower plugs out before I test fired it, the quart of oil that sprayed out all over my head, face and arms was pooled up in a low point within the exhaust pipe, which I didn't know about.

i saw a guy who mounted a 9 cylinder radial with the prop shaft facing towards the rear and he had to have a 90 degree gear box specially made at great expense. personally i think what you have done looks fantastic... just not sure about the size of the petrol tank and the amount of fuel that beast of an engine would eat up

its a Danish puller. the radial puts out about 3500 HP at 2500 rpm and the hemi about 1500 HP at 5000 rpm. there is a cluch mechanism between the two engines. actually the drive it around on the radial and only engages the hemi when waiting to start pulling. seen this monster live quite a few times, and it is ungodly loud! i love it

I doubt the hemi is to drive the vehicle around when not racing like others have mentioned. All that extra (engine) metal just to drive it around. It might be used to drive the supercharger. Those radials are supercharged. They are the same ones that the P47 used to use along with a remote turbo system in the rear of the airplane. The hemi might be driving the supercharger to get rid of parasitic loss.

It works just like the real thing. Its based on restitution rather than pressure, but it simulates the same effect. Those little balls there have absolutely no weight, so they act as the gas. The way the device rotates causes the force to change in each cylinder, thus rotating the engine. The red has a value of one, so when the pistons push the balls into it, it creates force. Blue has a value of zero, slowing the balls down. Im trying to replicate this at the moment.

@Naturepheonix The oil reservoir for a radial engine is basically the oil tank. For John's engine, the oil and the gas are stored in the same tank in the back of the engine, but they are separated by a divider so they do not mix. In radial engines, there is an oil pump that scavanges oil and pumps it back to the tank.

Actually the Le Rhone 9c (as modelled here) was throttleable from 900 RPM to 1200RPM (there is no "s" as in RPMs!) Still too fast to sink in say a 759 pound Nieuport 11 --so yes the blip switch was essential if you desired to land.

When the exhaust valve was closed and the piston retreated on the intake stroke, a vac was created in the cylinder and lifted the intake valve.. DId I imagine that?

Rotary engines generally had dual ignition. The first was the selector mag to run the engine full, half, quarter or 1/8 speed by disabling some pistons or changing the firing order to fire every 2nd or 3rd engine rotation. The second was the blip mag which turns the engine ignition on or off which you speak of. The problem with the blip mag is if you wait too long between "blips", the engine can explode (which wasn't uncommon) from the excessive amount of fuel in the cylinders.

It's not a push rod, it's a push-pull rod. The push-pull rod operates both the intake and exhaust valves by having links and levers inside the crank case. It's amazing a modern 1/3 scale Gnome engine can produce the same HP output as early full sized Gnome engines. If this project was a full blown 1:1 scale, it would probably produce 240 HP (the biggest Gnome was only 160 HP)

The Siemens-Halske SH.III had a conventional throttle, but it was plagued with other problems. Yup! That's the Wasp Junior. It was fitted to smaller airplanes such as the DHC-2 Beaver. It's basically a smaller version of the original Wasp engine. They did build larger "double row" Wasps, which gave around 2500hp!

Breathtaking video of an amazing plane ! The enginesound blew me away..! I have seen the Original fly at Reno Air-races and this RC-model really lives to its fullscale sister. Thankyou for a superb video !

AMAZING aircraft!!!!!! It sounds like the real thing and then some... loved the slow pass at idle...you can hear the prop whistle and everything.
